I’m starting to feel like I just might have this wedding under control. Problems arise left and right throughout the day, but I calmly and efficiently handle them… like a boss.

When dusk falls, we walk through the rehearsal, and I begin to realize this entire event could easily be considered a giant fiasco by an outside observer. I just hope the show’s editors will be kind when they put it all together.

The pastor, who is performing tomorrow’s ceremony, has been delayed, so I stand in and read her part.

Andrew’s nephew is supposed to be the ring bearer, but their family’s flights are still delayed, so Baggy pretends to play that part. She crawls around on her knees, despite the fact that her diminutive height is practically that of a child’s, even when she’s standing. She manages to drop the rings in the sand, so we spend at least five minutes searching for them.

Eventually, Jamie comes forward and admits the rings were fake stand-ins and that we should just continue with the rehearsal.

“Fakes?!?” Baggy splutters, obviously outraged. “You didn’t trust me with the real rings?” No one dares to point out that they were obviously right not to entrust her with the expensive versions.

We try to resume our practice session, but the wind kicks up and knocks the trellis archway down. Andrew is so surprised by the fracas that he allows the wind to steal the paper from his hand. “My vows!” he yells, chasing after the tiny paper.

His groomsmen and stand-ins follow suit. They all race after the paper, but no one catches it before it blows into the ocean. When Andrew returns to the toppled trellis where we are trying to walk-through the ceremony, his eyes are wide with panic. “I couldn’t catch them.”

“You remember them, right?” Ruthie tries to smile at him, but it is a wobbly gesture.

Andrew looks at me, silently pleading with me to help him out. Nodding, I answer for him. “Sure, we remember them.”

“We?!?” Ruthie looks rather taken aback as she glares in my direction. “You saw his wedding vows?”

“I just helped him with his word choice in a couple of areas,” I assure her, knowing she would not appreciate hearing that I had practically written them by myself. Andrew had been completely on board with the sentiment. He just hadn’t been sure how to express his feelings.

Ruthie nods, accepting my explanation, but her brow is still furrowed with a hint of annoyance. Deciding we need to jump back into our practice run before she has time to stew about this any more, I ask once more for everyone’s attention.

Almost as soon as things are quieting down, an alarmed scream pierces the air. My eyes dart to Baggy, but she is standing on the sidelines, looking as startled as everyone else. When I follow her stunned gaze, the sight that greets me makes my stomach lurch up to my throat.

Just behind Ruthie’s shoulder, her matron-of-honor and only sister, Roxy, has crumpled to the ground.

I lunge forward to check on my best friend in the entire world.
